The Practical Steps to Sponsoring Yourself for a UK Work Visa

There is no separate “self-sponsorship visa” in the Immigration Rules. The term usually describes a Skilled Worker application where you own or control a genuine UK business, the business obtains a sponsor licence, and it sponsors you for a genuine eligible job. Ownership is not itself prohibited, but the Home Office will look closely at whether the company exists for a real commercial purpose and whether the role is genuinely needed.

Current sponsor guidance specifically warns that a licence may be refused where an organisation appears to have been established mainly to facilitate someone’s entry or residence in the UK. The business must also be able to sustain the salary stated for the sponsored role.

Why this route works — and where it can fail

A company can sponsor a director or owner if the sponsor and job meet the normal Skilled Worker requirements. However, incorporation by itself is not enough. A sponsor must be a genuine organisation operating or trading lawfully in the UK. Home Office guidance treats credible pre-trading activity aimed at starting commercial trading in the foreseeable future as “operating”, but a start-up with no meaningful business activity, customers or credible commercial plan may struggle. Start-ups operating for less than 18 months must normally provide evidence of an appropriate UK business bank account.

The four stages

StageWhat happensTypical timing
1. Establish the UK businessRegister the company, open the necessary business accounts and build evidence of genuine operations or credible pre-trading activityNo fixed minimum period
2. Apply for a sponsor licenceDemonstrate lawful UK operations, compliant HR systems, eligible roles and suitable key personnelMost applications in under 8 weeks; eligible priority cases within 10 working days
3. Assign the Certificate of SponsorshipUse the correct CoS for the role once the licence and required allocation or request are in placeCase dependent
4. Apply for Skilled Worker permissionApply using the CoS and meet the job, salary, English and other immigration requirementsUsually 3 weeks outside the UK or 8 weeks inside

The £750 pre-licence priority service does not guarantee approval and can take longer if further checks are required.

The role and salary must stand up

The March 2026 sponsor guidance introduced the term “eligible role”; it did not remove scrutiny of whether a sponsored job is genuine and credible. UKVI can question roles that appear unnecessary for the business or salaries that do not appear sustainable from its financial position.

For most new Skilled Worker cases, the job normally needs to be at RQF Level 6 or above, although certain medium-skilled occupations remain eligible through the Immigration Salary List, Temporary Shortage List or transitional provisions. The usual salary requirement is at least £41,700 or the applicable going rate, whichever is higher, subject to permitted lower-salary options. New applicants generally need English at CEFR B2; some existing Skilled Workers can continue to rely on B1 when extending or updating their permission.

What compliance looks like after the visa is granted

A sponsor licence brings continuing reporting, record-keeping and monitoring duties. These are covered in our guide to sponsor licence compliance and our guidance on Certificates of Sponsorship. UKVI can conduct compliance checks before granting a licence or while it is held.

Where this leads

Skilled Worker permission can lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain after five qualifying years, provided the settlement requirements are met. Time can also be combined with certain other qualifying work routes.

After ILR, British citizenship by naturalisation is usually available once you have held settled status for 12 months, although there is no 12-month wait for an eligible spouse or civil partner of a British citizen.

If this structure is not appropriate, compare it with the UK Ancestry visa or the 10 year long residence route, depending on your circumstances.

Get your business case reviewed before you apply

A weak sponsor application can be refused, and there is no general merits appeal. A limited review may be available where UKVI made a caseworking error or failed to consider supporting documents.
